The earliest machine in the survey has serial number 62565. Machines with serial numbers lower than 174193 have the serial number on the flip-up plate (Photo 1). Machines with serial numbers above 182514 have the serial number on the stitch length plate (Photo 2). A sewing machine is a textile machine used to stitch fabric,paper,card and other material together with thread. Sewing machines were invented during the first Industrial Revolution to decrease the amount of manual sewing work performed in clothing companies.

This is a High Arm Vertical Feed (the fourth type developed). Made in Dayton, OH. It has rounded corners, a spool pin to the center of the arm with manual tension facing the operator instead of mounted on the arm. Underneath the machine VF is cast into the base.
